From legacy.com: A private funeral service will be held with no visitation. You can express your condolences online at www.baranfh.com. Greg was born on March 20, 1962, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon, and spent his entire life in the Calumet Region. He graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Whiting. A second-generation firefighter, Greg began his career with the Gary Fire Department and was selected to join Squad 2, an elite team that responded to hundreds of emergency calls annually. This group became one of the busiest heavy rescue units in the country, known for their exceptional skills and quick response times. When the events of September 11, 2001, unfolded, Greg joined fellow firefighters to support the FDNY in New York City. Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks and eventually retired as Chief of Operations after 27 years of dedicated service. After retiring, he continued to share his expertise as a training instructor at the BP Whiting Refinery, focusing on safety and emergency procedures. Greg was a proud member of IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, the Fire Buffs of Illinois, and a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. He had a deep passion for photographing fire apparatus and collecting memorabilia related to emergency vehicles. An avid traveler and lover of local food, he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago, located at 5218 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60609. For more information, call (219) 659-4400.
